Many people now need a workspace at home. More and more people are working independently from home or have the opportunity to work from home instead of in the office from time to time. But even otherwise, at least a laptop table is necessary for doing paperwork or checking emails in the evening. Space-saving solutions that combine comfortable living with uncomplicated working are particularly in demand in small apartments. Intelligent systems, such as folding desks, make it possible to set up a home office even in a small apartment. The most unusual places are conceivable here. If you make your way through the apartment, you are guaranteed to discover one or two unused corners that can be converted into a workspace. The main goal is to integrate the desk in such a way that after work there is no longer any reminder of tasks that have been left undone and work does not get in the way of stylish living.

1. A desk in the bookshelf

A space-saving option is a desk in the bookshelf. This can be either foldable or integrated into the bookshelf in the form of a wide shelf. The big advantage of this is that the bookshelf can be used for folders, notebooks and other documents that would otherwise take up storage space elsewhere. Pretty baskets in the bookshelf replace the space provided by drawers and rolling containers so that the workstation fits harmoniously into the living atmosphere.

2. Working on the windowsill

A workplace with a view out of the window—that's what many people dream of in their office. In a small apartment, this is very easy to do by connecting the desk to the windowsill. If you have wide windowsills, you can also use them as a desk. If you want to save even more space and only use the desk every now and then, choose a folding chair as a desk chair and you can even put it away after you've used the windowsill desk. Small boxes or drawers can be attached under a wide windowsill in which small items such as pens and erasers can disappear. Books that are left on the windowsill also make a nice decoration. However, the windows should still be able to be opened for ventilation. If the windowsill is narrow, the desk can simply be integrated into the windowsill, as in this example. The two shelves on the right and left under the shelf create storage space and give the small workplace a real home office feel.

3. Small work corner by the window

It doesn't necessarily have to be the windowsill. A corner desk like this in front of the window also provides enough lighting for working. It takes up little space and yet has everything a workplace needs. The tailor-made solution makes it possible to use all the available space and thus makes use of even the smallest corner. The subtle white matches the living concept of the rest of the room and even cleverly integrates the radiator. Files can be stored on the shelf above the desk and the cupboard allows work materials to quickly disappear so that the room has a pleasantly clear and calm atmosphere. If you use a desk like this as a solution for small apartments, you should just make sure to leave a gap above the radiator when installing it so that the warm air can rise and heat the room unhindered.

4. The workplace in an unused corner

In a small apartment, a workstation can often be set up where space would otherwise remain unused and “wasted”. This could be a wall where no shelf will fit or a corner in the hallway. Experts in cabinet and furniture construction provide tailor-made solutions. But this desk is also the perfect solution for unused corners. With its foldable work surface, it can be folded out whenever it is actually needed. Otherwise, it forms a unit with the wall and neither stands in the room nor does it create an obstacle in passageways. Hallways in particular often remain unused as a workstation because desks and chairs would get in the way. Folding systems like this solve this problem. Folding chairs that complement the workstation can simply be hung on a well-secured hook or a bike rack on the wall for storage near the desk.

5. Unobtrusive desk in the corner of the living room

The living room is the room in the home where you want to enjoy your evening and relax undisturbed. This works best when work disappears from view. To make this possible with a workstation in the living room, the desk should be as inconspicuous as possible. This simple desk disappears in front of the colourful seat cushions and curtains, which pick up the colour concept of the couch and form an ensemble with it. The desk fits perfectly into the design without taking up much space. Even the printer has space on the sideboard without constantly reminding you of work. An inconspicuous classic in the living room is the secretary with a lockable shelf. If you are now thinking of bulky, classic furniture, you are wrong. These are of course also available in a wide variety of designs. They are joined by modern desks with folding work surfaces or lockable cabinet elements behind which work documents can disappear in a flash.

6. Colorful workspace next to the bed

In small apartments, the desk often ends up in the bedroom. As this colorful example shows, it doesn't have to lead to a shadowy existence there. The colorful compartments turn the desk into a real eye-catcher that is at the same time inconspicuous enough to blend in with the ambience. The colorful compartments also provide storage space in which pens, notes and calculators can quickly disappear. It would be a shame to hide such a desk. If, on the other hand, you prefer not to have to look at your workstation in the bedroom, you can visually create spatial separation, for example by separating the desk from the rest of the room with a half-height shelf as a room divider. A folding screen is more space-saving. But a sliding curtain attached to the ceiling or professional sliding door systems that can be pushed in front of the desk are also chic room dividers. Depending on the design and color, they can contribute to a cozy ambience in the bedroom. If the desk cannot be hidden, you can simply use it as a shelf for candles for romantic hours. With a sea of tea lights in stylish candle holders, it is guaranteed to no longer remind you of unfinished business.
