Damage caused by mould

We encounter mould in many forms in the environment and it does not always pose a danger. However, undetected mould in living spaces can have serious consequences for the building structure and the health of the residents. Mould often hides undetected in the walls and, if it has already made its way onto the wall surface, also under the wallpaper. If this situation continues for too long, both people and buildings suffer serious damage. Subsequent damage can spread to the furniture as soon as mould spores fly through the air and attach themselves to it. When this infected furniture is moved, the mould also moves with it and spreads again in new terrain. If the mould is not visible on walls, it can often be smelled. In such a case, you should be on your guard and have the air in the room professionally examined. Ultimately, it is important to determine the cause of the mould formation and to remove the mould. A damp spot on the wall, for example, is an indication of water damage, which then needs to be repaired. Long-term damage caused by mould can lead to allergies in people and damage the building structure so profoundly that walls and entire houses may have to be dried out or demolished. So there is every reason to remove mould effectively!

Causes of mould

As already mentioned, one cause of mould growth can be hidden water damage. Often it is a small leak in a water pipe that releases water drop by drop over a long period. As time goes on, these drops turn into many litres that make their way through the walls and floors and imperceptibly moisten the building structure, which then causes mould. The cause of mould development can also be found in people's ventilation and heating habits. In many households, both points are approached incorrectly, so only correct ventilation and heating are a prerequisite for not only preventing mould but also for eliminating it. You are excused if you move into an existing house or apartment in which mould has long since become established. But we also give tips for eliminating mould in these cases.

First signs of mould

Mould can be noticed in living spaces in many ways. We have already mentioned the smell that mould spores spread throughout the room. These smells are usually pungent, are perceived as unpleasant and can irritate the mucous ducts and trigger coughing. If mould is caused by water damage, it will first become noticeable as a damp spot on the wall or floor. It is important to intervene immediately so that the effort of removing mould does not even have to be made. In the bathroom, mould tends to settle in the tile joints, but it can be successfully removed after the first signs appear.

Antiseptic primer

If you have found the source of the mould in your living space and want to remove the mould residue from the walls, it would be a fatal mistake to simply paint over it. To effectively prevent the mould from returning, you can help the walls by applying an antiseptic primer before applying the final coat of paint. The antiseptic primer will remove all bacteria, including mould so that you can enjoy the new wall paint for a long time. You can also have our experts carry out this work.

Bleach against mould

Bleach can also be used to remove mould and is used for this purpose primarily in bathrooms, where the green-black streaks of mould cover the tile joints. For health reasons, you should use an oxygen-based bleach for this household trick. What you now need to remove mould is cotton wool. Form this into long, thick strips, wet it with the bleach and press firmly onto the mouldy areas. It is best to get a stick to help you do this so that the bleach can be pressed firmly onto the mould. Now let the agent work overnight. Your efforts to remove mould will be rewarded with a mould-free bathroom the next morning.

Vinegar fights mould

Vinegar is an all-rounder in the home, so it's no surprise that this natural product can also be used to remove mould. The advantage is that vinegar is ecological and can be bought for just a few cents in the supermarket on the corner. In many households, vinegar is always in the cupboard as a cleaning product supplement, and can now find new use as a mold-fighting agent. To remove mould with vinegar, you can proceed in the same way as with the bleach method. This means that you take some cotton wool or kitchen paper and soak it in vinegar. Press the cotton wool or kitchen paper firmly onto the mouldy joints and leave it to work overnight. The next day, the mould will have been successfully removed!

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is known to some as H2O2, and others as a bleaching agent. The substance that gave Marilyn Monroe's hair its characteristic white-blonde colour can be used as a mould killer in your bathroom. You don't have to go to your old chemistry teacher or the nearest hardware store. This miracle cure is available in the hair colouring section of every drugstore. In the packaging, you will find various substances that are intended for mixing the dye. One of these liquids is the developing agent, which is used to remove mould. The proportion of hydrogen peroxide should be at least 5% so that the mould is effectively removed.

Baking powder

Finally, we turn to baking powder, a household remedy that works wonders to remove mould. As usual, it works in the gaps between kitchen or bathroom tiles and is used as a natural household remedy, just like with alternative cleaning. This means that water is mixed into the baking powder until a thick paste is formed. Now you need an old toothbrush, which you smear with the paste and then remove the mould by scrubbing it vigorously. You can find another idea book on the subject of renovation here.
