Although all current living trends talk about very open spaces that combine very different functions in the house, many houses still thrive on the fact that the actual living areas are separated from each other. Of course, we love having the kitchen, dining area and sofa corner in one room. But we still want to visually separate the areas from each other. Otherwise, the impression remains of a large room that contains little more than confusing chaos.

And so when we're furnishing, we're often dealing with living rooms that have few walls but not infinite space. But how do we skillfully furnish such a place? In this idea book, we'll give you some tips on how to design an area that's only around ten square metres. We'll concentrate entirely on the sofa corner.

We’ll give you advice right away — no strings attached.

1. Pay attention to the proportions in the room

If the sofa corner is not too big, we should not choose disproportionately large or bulky furniture. Because it might just about fit in the space. But then it won't look good. In this picture, the sofa fits well in the living area. Because the beautiful L-shape creates a closed area and provides a boundary to the kitchen behind it. The carpet supports the visual effect.

2. Furnish your home with flexible furniture

If you don't have much space, you should look for multifunctional furniture. For example, a coffee table can also be used as a side table. And maybe a sofa will surprise you with unexpected storage space inside?

PS: We also like the wooden chairs on the right side of the room, which, thanks to their straight lines, separate the living area from the rest of the room. Because they are rather narrow and tall, they take up little space and are still stylish eye-catchers.

3. Create storage space

Clutter is the enemy of small rooms or living areas. So please take the following advice to heart: Make sure it is tidy and that no unnecessary things are lying around here and there. If you think you can't manage that, make sure you have a small cupboard, a chest of drawers or a table with an interior where you can store small items.

4. Hang the TV on the wall

Do you hardly have any space on the floor and could use every square metre so that you can move around a little in the living area? A small but simple tip: hang your television on the wall. This way you can either do without TV furniture altogether. Or you can use the space where the television stands to store other things like books or a music box.

5. Focus on light colours

Bright rooms give us a feeling of apparent size in the room. In this respect, it is usually a good idea to choose light walls, ceilings and furniture in small living rooms. Do you think that's boring? We believe that our next picture proves the opposite and shows how beautifully elegant and at the same time cosy white furnishings can be. This works in both country house style and contemporary designs.

6. Combine neutral grey with a little colour

If you don't like white, you can try grey as a basis for your living room. Grey is an infinitely elegant colour that also looks great in small rooms. The key advantage of grey is that the colour can be beautifully decorated with bright accents. These can be pillows, accessories or a striking picture on the wall.

7. Illuminate even dark corners in the room

Lighting plays a key role in home design. Interior designers have recognized this in recent years, and interior designers include lighting concepts in their project planning right from the start. In addition to powerful ceiling lamps or spotlights, table or floor lamps ensure that darker corners of the room are also illuminated. This way, you can cheat a little with the few square metres. And no one notices.

8. Use mirrors consciously

Mirrors are also an interesting detail that makes small rooms seem larger. Strategically placed, they also make rooms appear larger and help reflect light in them, making the room brighter. But please do us a favour: you should still only use mirrors in moderation. Because too much of a good thing can quickly lead to an overtaxing of the senses.

9. Pay attention to sloping roofs

Is your small living area under a sloping roof? This can sometimes make living spaces seem quite oppressive. Always make sure that the wall side is as light as possible so that a certain feeling of lightness is created. It is better not to put a sofa under the sloping roof, but use the space to integrate a low chest of drawers, for example.

10. Mix different textiles and patterns

Both this and the previous example show how beautifully you can combine colours and different textiles. The endless combinations of curtains, cushions, blankets and carpets lead to unique looks that suit you perfectly and reflect your attitude to life. For once, it doesn't matter whether you have 10 or 20 square metres at your disposal.

11. Work with the wooden elements if you really want to

A wall clad in wood can look very heavy in a small living room. But if that's what you want as a furnishing element, then you shouldn't have to do without it. Just make sure that you combine such a highlight with light and soft colours and don't go too dark in the overall picture.

12. Don’t forget the plants

Last but not least: Plants always provide a natural focal point in the room and draw the viewer's attention to it. In small living rooms, this can mean that you suddenly no longer notice the boundaries. Tip: It is better to place slim, tall plants than those that can grow very wide.
